"Lady's Big Surprise, by JoAnn Dawson, was an instant hit with the students at my school. Students listened attentively to the reading and could relate to Mary and Jody, the two main characters. Ms. Dawson shared her love of reading, writing, and horses with the students and encouraged them to listen and reflect as she read an excerpt from the story. Following the reading, students were encouraged to ask questions and then went outside to pet Stumpy, the pony. Students in grades three through six were equally interested in this realistic novel."
